Traditional Portuguese Oven
Sugar Museum
The Portuguese oven was a necessity for the immigrants who came here to work on the sugar plantations. While it was sometimes used to roast meat or poultry, the oven's primary purpose was used to bake bread, which was a daily staple. This oven was built by Maui Agricultural Company in Paia in the 1920s, and resided on a Skill Village house lot. It was moved to the museum grounds in 1984.
