Sankofa Bird
For over a quarter of a century, Historic Sotterley has been dedicated to ensuring that the stories of all who lived and labored on these grounds are told. In this Sacred Space, we remember the families torn apart by slavery, those left behind in Africa, and those forced to endure on this land. Their pain echoes through generations, and today their descendants continue to carry their strength, resilience and enduring spirit. We honor those who walked before us, ensuring their stories and legacies live on.
Historic Sotterley's Descendants, Staff, and Board of Trustees
The Sacred Space project was made possible by a grant from the State of Maryland's African American Heritage Preservation Program.
The Sankofa Bird reminds us that we must continue to move forward as we remember our past. At the same time, we plant a seed for the future generations that come after us.
Erected by Historic Sotterley's Descendants, Staff, and Board of Trustees; made possible with a grant from the State of Maryland's African American Heritage Preservation Program.
