1. The Clavius Science Center Marker
This facility is named in honor of Christopher Clavius, S.J. (circa 1537-1612), mathematician, astronomer, and professor at the Jesuits' Roman College.
Referred to as "the Euclid of the sixteenth century," Clavius wrote many textbooks and helped shape the mathematical education of the Jesuit Order. Although he excelled in mathematics, he chose astronomy as his lifework and became one of the most prominent scientific figures of his day. He communicated with Galileo and was one of the scientists who verified the phenomena revealed through the telescope.
When it was determined that the Julian calendar was inaccurate, Clavius became a leader in replacing it with today's Gregorian calendar. In an 800-page book he explained the problems of the Julian system and charted the rules for an accurate calendar.
Students came from around the world to study with this respected scientist and teacher. The work of Clavius has had a profound effect on our world.
