1. “Bygone Days” Marker

Inscription. When the historic Chesapeake and Delaware Canal was opened in 1829, barges pulled by horses and mules transported cargo 14.6 miles between Chesapeake City and Delaware City. The animals walked along a dirt tow path on the north side of the canal, sometimes led or ridden by a young boy known as a hoggy. The adjacent sculpture depicts a mule resting at a canal lock along the way.
