The battery with its brigade crossed the Chickamauga early in the morning at Dalton's Ford and after moving north to the Alexander's Bridge Road remained in reserve till about 2 p. m. When the brigade advanced the battery followed till ordered by Gen. Maney to leave one piece and fall back about 300 yards with the remaining three. The piece left in charge of Lieut. C. S. Smith commenced firing and continued to do so till Lieut. Smith was wounded and it was forced to retire by the advance of the enemy. It then rejoined the battery on this ground. About this time the enemy was seen advancing steadily in line of battle, when the battery opened fire and three times with little assistance repulsed him in its immediate front. Early in the engagement Lieut. Ingraham was killed. The engagement lasted about an hour during which the battery fired 220 rounds of solid
