Allen High School
1887 - 1974
Founded October 31, 1887 by Mr. and Mrs. Lewis M. Pease and later donated to the Women's Home Missionary Society of the Methodist Episcopal Church, Allen Home for Girls, named in honor of English Quaker benefactor, Mrs. Marriage Allen, officially became Allen High School in June 1945. Providing an environment that bolstered the dignity and strength of African American women, over 50% of this private school's 1,177 graduates attended national colleges and universities. Allen served as "a beacon of education during an era of segregation" until it closed its doors in 1974.
