1. Walloon Village Marker
By the turn of the 20th century, Walloon Lake which was first called Bear Lake, and later Talcott (or Tolcott) was transitioning from a lumbering community to a thriving summer resort destination.
Fresh air, home cooking, fishing, and sailing were popular activities drawing tourists from throughout the midwest.
As the village grew at the foot of the glacial spring-fed lake, summer visitors came by steamers and trains, ultimately building small cottages or staying in one of several hotels and boarding houses that began to pop up around the lake. Before long, the "downtown" area boasted three stores, a bowling alley, a bath house, a hotel, and a post office.
