Life With The Ohio Canal
| | Historical Views of Groveport | |
Groveport's Canal Lock 22 was one of 146 locks on the canal. The 308-mile-long Ohio and Erie Canal, which extended from Cleveland to Portsmouth, opened in Groveport in 1831 and was in use until the early 1900s. Warehouses and other buildings line the banks of the canal in this 1908 view from Wirt Road to Main Street. In the background, Groveport Town Hall and the Main Street bridge are visible..
The lock's function was lifting and lowering canal boats to meet the changing terrain. Boats are raised or lowered by filling or emptying the lock chamber. Doors at each end of the lock chamber allow the boats to enter and leave..
Though the canal's primary purposes were for commercial shipping and passenger travel, it also provided for recreation such as ice skating, swimming, and fishing. The basin at Lock 22 was a popular spot for ice skating parties.
