The Ohio And Erie Canal
| | Historical Views of Groveport | |
A large boatyard, where canal boats were built and repaired, once operated in what is now Groveport's Blacklick Park..
Fishing was a popular pastime along the canal with the basin at Lock 22, which is considered a good location for catching black bass, while other parts of the canal in town yielded bullheads, rock bass, sunfish, and carp..
In 1893, a small break in the canal temporarily drained a portion of the channel, and boys rushed in to scoop up fish stranded in the muck..
Ice was harvested from the canal for refrigeration as workers cut out ice blocks with large hand saws..
The waters of the canal were also sometimes used for religious baptisms.
