Oak Woodland Restoration
Heritage Park is located on the narrow sand ridge, once the Lake Michigan shoreline, and is home to native Black and White Oaks. Without management for 75 years, the woodland had become crowded with non-native or invasive tree and shrub species. Dying trees, lack of oak regeneration, and native plant suppression are problems the site faced. In 2008, a tornado tore thru the woodland, causing considerable tree damage.
Munster Parks & Recreation, thru various grants, obtained funding for restoration projects administered by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, Lake Michigan Coastal zone program, to aggressively restore 11.2 acres of historic oak savannah/woodland on the site of the historic 1845 Brass Tavern stagecoach stop.
