General Information
Red Pandas are about 20-25 inches long, with 12-20 inch long tails. They weigh 8-13 pounds, similar to a house cat. Their entire body is covered in dense fur to keep them warm in their high-altitude environment. Their long tails help with balance, but also keep them warm. Red Pandas can live up to 23 years old.
Diet
While Red Pandas are classified under the order Carnivora, they are primarily herbivorous. In the wild, their diet consists of plants, insects, and occasionally small animals. The largest portion of their diet is bamboo. Red Pandas eat 2-4 pounds of bamboo in a day!
Range and Habitat
Red pandas live in high-altitude, temperate forests with bamboo understories in southern Asia, China, Nepal, and Myanmar.
Conservation Status
Endangered
Red pandas have been listed as endangered since 2015 and have continued to decline in population. Red Pandas are facing threats from habitat destruction, habitat fragmentation, and poaching.
Wild Fact!
Red Pandas are not related to Giant Pandas. They are the only member of the family Ailuridae!
