Dr. Albert A. Dixon was one of Pensacola's first black physicians. He is the namesake of Dixon School of Arts & Sciences, formerly known as A. A. Dixon Elementary School.

Excerpt: Born In DLo, Miss., Dr. Albert Augusta Dixon was the third child of Mr. John Wesley Dixon, a farmer and teacher, and Mrs. Susie Dixon. Dixon Discovery Pavilion MarkerThe marker and pavilion are near the center of the Dixon Amity Peace Trail.Aspiring to be a medical doctor since boyhood, Albert had no finances for medical school and so became a teacher, and later the principal, at Simpson County School. It is said that he always taught his students to advance and to never stand still. Many of his students were successful and followed him into his profession. Dixon never gave up his dream of becoming a doctor. He worked extra jobs, saved his money, and enrolled in Louisville State Medical College, continuing to work through medical school. He graduated in 1911, got married and moved with his bride to Pensacola.
Dr. Dixon served the Pensacola community until his death in 1937. In addition to his medical practice, he owned a pharmacy in downtown Pensacola and served as president of the Pensacola Academy of Medicine, Dentistry and Pharmacy. It is said that he worked day and night, both with and without pay, for over 20 years. He had a keen interest in young people and was very concerned about their advancement in education: All young people who came in touch with him received abundant encouragement to go to school and become prepared, a relative once wrote. Many were inspired by Dr. Dixon and are now practicing in Pensacola and beyond, and a Pensacola school near downtown Pensacola is named in his honor, Dixon School of Arts & Sciences.
