Inscription. The Warsaw Uprising of 1944 was the biggest revolt against Hitler’s forces during World War II. After 5 years of brutal oppression Poland’s Home Army (Armia Krajowa) decided to rise from the underground and drive the Germans out of the capital city of Warsaw. Ill equipped but determined to defeat the injustice the Polish fighters took up arms against the world’s most powerful war machine. Due to the lack of promised aid what was to be a few days of fighting turned to 63 days of bloodshed. Abandoned by the Allies Warsaw was left bleeding to death. The insubordinate city where the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising took place the previous year enraged Hitler’s fueled anger. Hitler decided to rage havoc on the capital. As a result over 250,000 Warsaw citizens were murdered with 85% of the capital city leveled to the ground. This memorial is dedicated to all those who fought and died during the uprising.
