Inscription.

Oak Grove Cemetery was founded in 1851 by Deacon S.T. Smith as a simple burial ground, and little attention was paid to landscape design. The site began to take on its present aesthetic under the leadership of Joseph W. Losey and Henry I. Bliss in 1878, when the Cemetery Association began to transform it into a more formal, park-like setting. In keeping with the Rural Cemetery movement popular in the United States at that time, landscape architect Prosper Stevens designed a plan that reflected the Rural Romantic style. Walkways and formal landscape features followed the natural gently rolling topography of the land, with locations that provided scenic vistas of the city’s eastern bluffs at its highest points. The cemetery consists of 80 acres. Many prominent community leaders are buried here, a practice that persists today.

Erected by Oak Grove Cemetery Association. (Marker Number 636.)
