A Legacy of Innovation and Philanthropy
Moses Franklin Rittenhouse (1846-1915) was a Canadian-American business man and philanthropist born in Vineland, Ontario who amassed his fortune in the lumber industry after moving to Chicago. Throughout the late 1800s and early 1900s he made a number of community donations and funded the Rittenhouse Library, Rittenhouse Public School. Victoria Hall, and the paving of Victoria Avenue between the lake and Vineland.
In 1906, Rittenhouse purchased and donated 225 acres of land to the province in order to establish the Horticultural Experiment Station at Jordan Harbour. His name is still synonymous with this site, with Rittenhouse Hall, a heritage building, sitting before you and still in use today. His generosity played a pivotal role in fostering competitiveness and innovation of the tender fruit, vegetable, and greenhouse sectors within the Niagara Region, making it one of Canada's most unique geographic areas.
In 2007, the Station was transformed into the Vineland Research and Innovation Centre, an independent, not-for-profit organization dedicated to horticultural science and innovation in Canada. The 218-acre Vineland campus now includes research laboratories, farms, and greenhouses, owned by Agricultural Research and Innovation Ontario (ARIO).
