1. Fleming Farms Hatchery Marker

Inscription. In 1923, Aubrey Fleming began incubating chicks in a small carriage shed on his fruit farm, located at this site, and established one of the first chick hatcheries in Ontario. In the early years, most of the chicks raised in this area had been ordered by mail from a yearly produced catalogue. Aubrey's son Art shared his father's interest and raised his first flock of laying hens in 1933 when he was ten years old. When Aubrey Fleming died in 1937, his wife and son carried on the business. By 1958, Fleming Chicks Ltd., under Art's leadership, had acquired ten farms and one thousand acres to produce their own eggs which were hatched at a large facility on Ontario Street, not far from where it all began.
