Für demokratische Tradition und revolutionären Geist
1848 Märzrevolution 1998
Am Abend des 18. März verteidigten sich hier
Barrikadenkämpfer mit Unterstützung vieler Bürger
gegen die vom Schlossplatz her angreifenden Truppen.

1848 March Revolution 1998
On the evening of March 18, barricade fighters here defended themselves, supported by many citizens, against troops attacking from Schlossplatz. From today’s Rathausbrücke, two cannons fired upon the fighters. Among the victims was their leader Levin Weiß, a student from Danzig.
“Yet despite it all, that all around, the hand of brotherhood is extended from one person to another despite it all!”
Ferdinand Freiligrath (1843), after Robert Burns (1795)
