Jackson House
Built ca. 1890 by Probate Judge James Kumpe, the Jackson House is considered an excellent example of Craftsman architecture and was once among the grandest homes in Moulton. The house originally stood on the corner of Main and Walnut streets, one block south of the town square. Judge Kumpe owned forty acres of land in Moulton. Three of his children built their homes within walking distance of their father's house. Ola Kumpe, who never married, remained in the house after her father died in 1918. Judge Kumpe's successor, Probate Judge W. R. Jackson, bought the house from her in 1926. Jackson and his wife Arrie (Young) lived in the home together until his death in 1951. W. R. and Arrie Jackson had no children and the home went to Jackson heirs upon her death.
In the late 1970's, the home was converted into a restaurant. The endeavor was short-lived, but resulted in the wraparound porch being enclosed in glass. The property was then purchased by Bell Telephone Company, which later donated the house to the City of Moulton with the provision that it be demolished or relocated. Grant funding allowed the city to move the Jackson House and convert it into a Senior Center, which opened in 1979. Upon the relocation of the Senior Center to the former City Hall in 2012, the Jackson House was empty once again. The Jackson House Foundation formed to oversee its care and restoration. Their efforts, with grants from the Muscle Shoals National Heritage Area, ensured the preservation of the historic home for generations to come.
