1. Welcome to Wayside Park Marker
Inscription. Welcome to Wayside Park, a 50 acre natural area featuring Sycamore Creek, mature forests, open fields, historic structures, and wonderful park amenities.

Wayside Park was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in 1935 as a recreation area and rest stop for travelers, under the direction of the National Park Service and Virginia Department of of Highways. Pittsylvania Wayside Virginia was one of seven waysides built by the CCC.  The Civilian Conservation Corps was part of President Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal to provide jobs during the Great Depression. The CCC constructed conservation projects in rural areas from 1933 - 1942. Many of the structures and parks remain in use today and are a testament to expert craftsmanship and design. Wayside Park features several CCC structures which reflect design principles advanced by the National Park Service, and include the swinging bridge, a timber frame picnic shelter, stacked stone walls and tall chimney grills.

Features added in 2020 include a handicap accessible playground, pickleball courts, picnic shelters, performance space, LOVE sculpture, and an extensive system of paved, gravel and natural trails.

2020 park improvements were made possible by generous donations from the Danville Regional Foundation, Virginia Department of Transportation, J.T.
