És significatiu que, el 23 d'agost de 1936, aquest emplaçament vinculat a la repressió i la injustícia fos elegit pel president Companys i un nombrós grup de ciutadans per celebrar la presa de possessió del Castell per part de la Generalitat republicana. Els actes d'aquella jornada giraren a l'entorn d'una gran senyera hissada pel mateix president en memòria de les primeres víctimes del cop d'estat del general Franco, ocorregut un mes abans. En el seu discurs, Companys digué que "La senyera immortal de Catalunya onejarà sobre el Castell, que no serà mai més un presidi d'esclavitud i mort". La bandera, retirada immediatament després de la presa feixista de la ciutat, fou restituïda per l'Ajuntament de Barcelona l'any 2011.
It is significant that this site, with its history of repression and injustice, was chosen by the president of Catalonia Lluís Companys and a large gathering of citizens to celebrate the takeover of the castle by the Republican Generalitat government on 23 August 1936. Es significativo que el 23 de agosto de 1936 este emplazamiento vinculado a la represión y la injusticia fuera elegido por el presidente Companys y un numeroso grupo de ciudadanos, para celebrar la toma de posesión del Castillo por parte de la Generalitat republicana. Los actos de aquella jornada versaron entorno a una gran bandera catalana izada por el propio presidente en memoria de las primeras víctimas del golpe de estado del general Franco, ocurrido un mes antes. Il est évident que le 23 août 1936 cet emplacement lié à la répression et à l'injustice fût choisi par le président Companys et un groupe important de ressortissants pour célébrer la prise de contrôle du Château par une partie de la Généralité Républicaine. Les événements de cette journée donnèrent lieu à un grand drapeau catalan hissé par le président lui-même en mémoire aux premières victimes du coup d'État du général Franco, qui avait eu lieu à peine un mois avant. Dans son discours, Companys dit que "La senyera immortal de Catalunya onejarà sobre el Castell, que no serà mai més un presidi d'esclavitud i mort" ("Le drapeau immortel de Catalogne flottera sur le Château, qui ne sera jamais plus une prison d'esclavage et de mort"). Le drapeau, retiré immédiatement après la prise de la ville, fût restitué par la municipalité de Barcelone en 2011.
