De AWV en de vakbond
De woningen rondom het Transvaalplein zijn gebouwd door de Algemene Woningbouw Vereeniging (AWV), voorloper van Stadgenoot. De AWV is in 1910 opgericht vanuit de socialistische vakbeweging. De meest invloedrijke vakbond in die dagen was de Algemene Nederlandse Diamantbewerkersbond (ANDB). Het bestuur stelde zich ten doel de aangesloten leden maatschappelijk te verheffen. Niet alleen op de werkvloer kregen de arbeiders een betere positie. Ook in de vrije uren zouden zij worden gevormd met muziek, literatuur en betere woonomstandigheden.

The AWV and the Trade Union
The homes surrounding Transvaalplein were built by the Algemene Woningbouw Vereeniging (AWV)—the predecessor of the Stadgenoot. The AWV was founded in 1910, emerging from the socialist trade union movement. The most influential trade union of that era was the Algemene Nederlandse Diamantbewerkersbond (ANDB) (Dutch Diamond Workers Union). The organization's leadership set itself the goal of the social upliftment of its members. Workers were to secure a better position
