Actieve bewoners
Veel pleinbewoners waren maatschappelijk of politiek actief.

Active Residents
Many residents of the square were socially or politically active. All of them were members of a trade union. Among them was a large number of Jewish diamond workers affiliated with the ANDB. They were convinced of the socialist ideal: "There is but one country: our Earth. There is but one people: humanity."

The square had a residents' committee with Joseph Bonn as its chairman. He was known as the "Mayor of Transvaalplein."
