1. Savannah Cemetery Marker
Inscription. Located southwest of Avery, this historic cemetery originated as the final resting place for Red River County pioneer, planter and legislator James Titus (1775-1843). His wife, Rebecca Edmondson Titus (1788-1846), and many descendants are buried here, including Andrew Jackson Titus (1814-1855), the namesake of Titus County, Texas. The cemetery became a community burial ground fairly quickly, as many headstones with different surnames date to the 1840s. Monuments include religious references, military designations and fraternal organization affiliations, representing a wide spectrum of members of the Savannah community, all important to the heritage of the area.
