Friend of improvement, educationist, and agriculturalist (1811-1876). Author classic biography, "Thomas Jefferson" (1858), and bestselling sheep manual, "The Practical Shepherd" (1863). New York Secretary of State (1852-1853), Assemblyman (1871), and founding president of the Cortland Normal School (1868-1876). Heritage organization of the S.U.N.Y. at Cortland.
