The place where you now stand was once a busy railway stop for passenger travel and commercial exchange of merchandise and cargo. Since the railway's establishment in the late 1800's to the removal of the tracks in early 1990's, these lands were devoid of vegetation and degraded by years of rail operations.
In the following decades, nature has demonstrated its amazing ability to recover. More recently, through the vision and efforts of community groups, the lands are being rehabilitated for the enjoyment of all who travel this trail and the wildlife that inhabit the lake and shoreline.
Along the trail itself, native and Carolinian tree species and shrubs such as White Pine, White Oak, Red Bud, Paw Paw and Tulip have been planted in an attempt to restore these lands to a more natural landscape that encourages wildlife including many bird species such as Baltimore Oriole, Indigo Bunting, Screech Owl, Woodpeckers and Swallows that now have a food source as well as water and shore habitat. Bald Eagle sightings in the area of the ponds can be a special moments for trail walkers.
Waterfowl including several species of ducks, Canadian Geese and Tundra Swans use the ponds as a stopover during their spring and fall migration. Several species of turtles including the Bland-ings turtle and Snapping turtle also contribute to the health and beauty of the area.
