1. Lake View Community Marker

Inscription. The Lake View Community began in 1938 as a government resettlement project. It was one of three New Deal farm communities established for Arkansas' black farmers during the Great Depression.

Homesteaders were selected from 11 Arkansas counties. There were 92 farms of at least 40 acres, each with a house, barn, outhouse, chicken house, a smokehouse and pasture. The government provided tools, 2 mules, 1 cow, hogs, a peach orchard and chickens. The churches and school were the center of the community. The school had a pre-school and a model Home Economics Department, where a nurse taught women about healthy lifestyles and a home economist taught canning, mattress making and quilting. Men could learn welding, mechanics and other skills. At one time, the largest gymnasium-complex in eastern Arkansas was located in Lake View. All black students in south Phillips County attended Lake View High School until mandatory desegregation of schools in 1967. The member-owned Lake View Cooperative Association formed in 1937 operated a cotton gin, general store. service station, sorghum molasses mill, cannery and blacksmith shop. Most
