Inscription. This memorial is erected in grateful remembrance of the patriotic heroism of the 443 members of Veteran Post 49, Dept. of Illinois, Grand Army of the Republic, who, at the call of their country, served in the four years War of the Rebellion 1861-1865. And when that terrible struggle was over loyally took up the duties and obligations of citizenship in a reunited nation, for which they fought and which they helped to save. We cherish their memory and render them the supreme gratitude of our hearts.
