Fairport Harbor in Lake County, Ohio — The American Midwest (Great Lakes)
Lighthouse View
Lake Erie is the shallowest of the five Great Lakes. It has an area almost 10,000 square miles and it's bordered by four American states and Canada. Port Stanley, Ontario is almost 54 nautical miles due north of here.
Perched on the bluffs of the Grand River, Fairport Harbor played an important role in the building of this part of Ohio region known as the Western Reserve. The first settlers landed at Fairport Harbor before making their way south to settlements such as Burton and Kirtland. The harbor became the first federally sponsored port facility on Lake Erie.
The Fairport Harbor West Breakwater Light, commissioned in 1925 to replace the lighthouse behind you, still serves as an active aid to navigation. The light is now automated and maintained by the US Coast Guard while the keeper's dwelling has become a private residence.
To the northwest, south of West Breakwater, is the US Coast Guard Station, established in 1876 as the US Life Saving Service Station - Fairport.
Directly in front of you is Fairport Harbor's outdoor amphitheater used for festivals, concerts, weddings, and locally sponsored events. East of the amphitheater is the Fairport Harbor Lakefront Park whose beach is considered one of the best in Ohio.
Thank you for visiting the Fairport Harbor Marine Museum and Lighthouse. We invite you to come inside to learn more about the nautical history of the Great Lakes and then enjoy a trip to the top of the lighthouse. It is only 69 steps to a beautiful view of Lake Erie and the Village of Fairport Harbor.
