1. About Veterans Park Marker
Veterans Park protects the largest inland pond in the county and a portion of a high-quality original Lake Erie swamp forest.
Granger Pond, purchased in 1970 by the City of Mentor, was formally a sand and gravel operation owned by Leonard and Belle Granger. The pond is annually stocked with bass, bluegill, rainbow trout and catfish. Fishing is a popular pastime here.
The diverse habitats of this park are home to a variety of wildlife. Migratory birds, including ducks, geese and songbirds, find the park a we come stopover point during their annual migration.
Lake Metroparks manages Veterans Park through lease agreements with the City of Mentor, Mentor City Schools and the City of Mentor-on- the-Lake. The outdoor classroom area is often used by students from Memorial Junior High School.
