Coach Janet Maull-Martin has been a pillar of "firsts" in the Cape community from the very start. In 1968 she was the first African-American female to play a varsity sport at Lewes High School. She then went on to attend Cape Henlopen High School after consolidation and was a member of the first graduating class in 1970. Coach Maull-Martin began her coaching career in 1975 when she coached field hockey, basketball and softball at Milton Middle School. In 1984 she moved to Cape Henlopen High School where she coached the girls' basketball team alongside Bob Cassidy. She took over the head coaching position in 1986 becoming the first African-American female coach. She took the team to the state tournament semi-finals in 1986, 1987 and 1988, winning back-to-back Conference Championships in '87 and '88, earning her the 1988 Henlopen Conference Girls' Basketball Coach of the Year. In 1994 she went on to lead the ninth grade Boys' Basketball team making her the first female to coach a boys' team in competition for Cape Henlopen High School, and tallied a winning record of 10-2. Coach Maull-Martin continues to make a difference at Cape, serving in roles where she leads with integrity and passion, showing her unwavering dedication to the students, staff and community through her participation on the Cape Henlopen School District Board of Education.
