Inscription. Carolyn Ivins was the first field hockey coach at the newly consolidated Cape Henlopen High School, leading the program from 1969 to a 1979 state championship, the first for a downstate team. She began coaching field hockey at Lewes High School in 1962 and quickly set to work molding young women of diverse races, backgrounds and abilities into powerhouses united for the good of the team. Coach Ivins was the Henlopen Conference Coach of the Year for field hockey three straight seasons 1977-78-79. She also coached tennis, basketball and track in her 29-year career as a physical education teacher. A winner of the prestigious Delaware Women's Alliance for Sport and Fitness Pioneer Award, Ivins taught her athletes that success in sports enhances academics and that the final score is never as important as playing the game.
