the army's medical officer reserve corps as a first lieutenant in 1917. Two years later he opened a practice where he worked for 48 years as a general practitioner. He estimated that he delivered more than 3,000 babies including children whose mothers he delivered years before. He traveled by horse and buggy and on horseback to visit patients. The doctor charged as little as 50 cents for house calls and for complex situations, only $75.
