1. Santee Cooper Hydroelectric & Navigation Project Marker
Land clearing for the construction of the Santee Cooper Hydroelectric and Navigation Project from 1939-1942 necessitated the building of 22 work camps, 11 of which were portable, so they could easily be moved to other locations as work progressed. The men were housed in barracks like these two, which were located in Pinopolis, S.C. Larger barracks were two stories. The camps provided clean, healthy quarters and nourishing meals. Labor was largely provided by the Works Progress Administration or WPA. Overseeing the project was the Public Works Administration or PWA; both agencies were part of President Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal national recovery program.
