South Nebraska in Tampa in Hillsborough County, Florida — The American South (South Atlantic)
Ann Lowe
One of the most important, but lesser-known, fashion designers in Tampa's history lived and worked in a small home near this location, at 1514 Jefferson Street, during the 1920s. Ann Lowe made dresses for Tampa's elite, including several Gasparilla Queen's gowns, wedding gowns, and other formal dresses. After her move to New York, and into the world of major fashion design, Lowe created the wedding gown and other garments for the wedding between John F. Kennedy and Jacqueline Bouvier. Lowe, born on December 14, 1898, in Clayton, Alabama, learned sewing from her mother. She was hired by Josephine Edwards Lee of Thonotosassa in eastern Hillsborough County in 1916 to design and make dresses for the family's girls. Lowe soon began working for other prominent white citizens in the county before moving to Tampa. She was featured in a 1926 newspaper article, and by that time she and her 12 assistants had made over 150 wedding gowns for brides in Florida and Alabama. Her dresses are featured in museum collections in Tampa and around the country.
