Un petit monde en soi
Les canaux forment, du moins au Canada, un monde à part largement méconnu du grand public. C'était encore plus vrai à l’époque de la navigation commerciale au canal de Lachine, alors que seuls les gens du métier ou les ouvriers des usines y avaient accès. Heureusement, les photographies anciennes donnent un aperçu de cet environnement unique, composé d’écluses, de bassins, de ponts et de déversoirs. Autour de l’écluse no 2, une quinzaine de bâtiments divers, logettes, abris, maisons, etc., était à la disposition des employés du canal. Ceux-ci travaillaient également sur le plan d’eau avec des barges, des dragues et des remorqueurs.
