Príosúnaigh phlástair Naomh Pól
Níl Séipéal Naomh Pól, a tógadh i dtosach na 1700idí, ach tamall gairid de shiúl na gcos ón áit seo. Meastar gur phríosúnaigh chogaidh Napoleon a rinne an tsíleáil stucó phlástair taobh istigh. Siopa miondíola atá anois ann agus is deacair a shamhlú gur shéipéal a bhí ann tráth!
St Paul’s Plaster Prisoners
A short walk from here is St Paul’s Church built in the early 1700s. The plaster stucco ceiling inside is believed to be the work of Napoleonic prisoners of war. Now a retail store, it’s hard to believe it was once a church!

Gar don áit seo, feicfidh tú dealbh i ndílchuimhne an cheoltóra Rory Gallagher a fheictear anseo ag siúl suas Cnoc Phádraig, Corcaigh i 1974.
Nearby, you can see a sculpture honouring Irish musician Rory Gallagher, seen here walking up St Patrick’s Hill, Cork in 1974.

Castle Street
Ardaigh na geataí ríoga
Ainmníodh an tsráid seo as dhá chaisleán a bhíodh san áit a mbuaileann Sráid an Chaisleáin le Sráid an Chapaill Bhuí anois. Bhíodh Caisleán na Banríona agus Caisleán an Rí nasctha lena chéile le Geata Uisce a cheadaíodh do longa dul isteach sa chathair mhúrtha.
Raise the Royal Gates
This street is so called because at one time two castles stood where present-day Castle Street meets Grand Parade. Queen’s Castle and King’s Castle connected to form what was known as the Watergate which allowed ships to enter the walled city.

Cuaille bréantais taobh amuigh de Shéipéal Naomh Peadar agus Naomh Pól. Thugtaí píopaí bréantais ar na cuaillí arda seo freisin, agus is é a bhí iontu gaotaí Victeoiriacha a scaoileadh boladh píopaí séarachais faoi thalamh amach go hard san aer (ionas nach bhfaigheadh daoine an boladh).
Stench pole outside St Peter and Paul’s Church. Also known as stinkpipes, these tall poles are actually Victorian vents designed to carry the smell of underground sanitary pipes high into the air (and away from sensitive noses).

Nuair a bhíothas ag leagan síos píopaí nua séarachais i 1996 ar Shráid an Chaisleáin, tháinig seandálaithe ar bhunsraitheanna Chaisleán na Banríona agus ar chodanna de bhalla na cé meánaoísí. Tá go leor d’oidhreacht mheánaoiseacl Chorcaí i bhfolach faoi do chosa fós.
In 1996, when new sewage pipes were being laid on Castle Street, archaeologists found the foundations of Queen’s Castle and sections of the medieval quay wall. Much of Cork’s medieval heritage is still buried beneath your feet.
