Inscription.
In 1665 the town of Wethersfield (which Rocky Hill was then a part of) granted to Rev. Bulkeley 110 acres to build a grist mill. This is the site, at the most easterly waterfall on Dividend Brook, where the railroad now spans the stream, where Rev. Bulkeley built his grist mill in 1667. This was the beginning of industry along Dividend Brook.

The town gave him permission to flood as much of the town land as needed to produce sufficient waterpower to operate his mill. The mill pond which was created later became known as "Lower Dividend Pond." Some years later, the grist mill on this site was relocated upstream, near the falls, to an area called "the hollow."

In the late 1700s, Ephriam Goodrich had a saw mill on this site.

Some stone work of Bulkeley's original dam can still be seen, but the building of the railroad in 1871 obliterated the bulk of the original grist mill and saw mill sites.
