1. North Carolina State Flag of 1861-1865 Marker
Inscription. On May 20, 1861, exactly eight-six years to the day after North Carolina formally expressed her determination for independence from the Great Britain in the Mecklenburg Resolves, the people of North Carolina once again declare their independent spirit by seceding from the jurisdiction of the United States government. On June 22, 1861, North Carolina, as one of the Confederate states, adopted a flag that showed both dates.
