Inscription.
Covering the Byler Road and all of Walker County, the Mountain Eagle began as a weekly newspaper in 1872, shortly after Rev. John Anthony hired James M. Williams to haul a printing press by wagon from Tuscaloosa to Jasper. Williams said that with the mountainous terrain, "only an eagle could get to some of the homes in Walker County." Fires that destroyed the Eagle's offices in 1878, 1922, and 1948 resulted in several changes in ownership in the early years. By 1891, the paper boasted the state's largest weekly circulation and became a daily in 1960. Located at 2026 3rd Avenue from 1965-1979, the Daily Mountain Eagle operated here from 1979-2023, then moved to another location.
