Inscription. Federal non-commissioned officer quarters were of a temporary nature and were coarsely constructed. These structures offered little or no comfort other than a respite from the winter wind and snow. Ranking officers fared better, resting in private homes in the area. A common soldier would be issued a tent which was placed sometimes on a rock foundation.

Common sights at an NCO structure such as that sketched by Jennifer Kessel Sites, might include soldiers on guard duty, tethered horses, couriers bringing important information and/or a fire for warmth and coffee.

The cabin you see constructed here would be considered a handsome guest house, in comparison.
