Inscription.
Sgt. Luther James Dorsey, born around 1852 under slavery in Maryland, was a veteran of Company E of the 10th Cavalry of the United States Army. He served from November 1873 to November of 1878. The 9th and 10th Cavalry regiments were created in 1866 as African American units and later became known as the "Buffalo Soldiers." Sgt. Dorsey was recruited to the regiment from Washington D.C. and saw action in the Indian Territory. During his service, the regimental headquarters of the 10th were moved back to Texas. Sgt. Dorsey and the 10th brought safety, order, and technology to vast regions of Texas by protecting settlers, livestock, roads, railroads, and telegraph lines. Upon his discharge, Sgt. Dorsey settled in Montgomery County and raised his family here. He became a pillar of the Black community until his passing in 1939.
