Civil War Crossroads
Less than 50 miles north of the Tennessee border, Casey Co. served as a strategic crossroads for Union and Confederate forces stationed in south-central Ky. Both armies had encampments in Liberty and Middleburg at various times. U.S. cavalry units pursued C.S.A. guerrillas and cavalry units from Liberty and briefly held prisoners of war here.
Martin's Creek Skirmish, 1863
Following a Confederate attack on Lebanon, Ky., on July 10. 1863, a detachment of the C.S.A. 2nd Ky. Cavalry fought the U.S. 1st Ky Cavalry at Martin's Creek in northern Casey Co. Most of the C.S.A. troops were captured and sent to Union prisons. Confederate guerrilla activity terrorized the area until the war ended nearly two years later.
