Inscription. The King family moved from Yamhill County, Oregon to San Juan Island in 1877. James F. King built this farmhouse in 1894, after his log cabin had been destroyed by fire. After obtaining title to his 160-acre homestead in 1890, King eventually expanded his farm to 445 acres, with 80 acres in crops and the balance for grazing. The family raised sheep and cattle and tended an orchard of some 300 pear and apple trees. James F. King also worked as a road supervisor, contractor for installing telephone lines, and drayer (teamster).
