(A professional soldier from Brabant who fought successively for the Batavian Republic, Napoleon’s Kingdom of Holland, and the French Empire. As a general, he helped defeat Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo. During the Belgian Revolution, he—like Van Speijk—attained hero status in the Netherlands, partly due to his heavy artillery bombardment of Antwerp.)
