An diesem Ort lebte Anna Magdalena Bach, geb. Wilcke, von 1723 bis 1750. Die ehemals fürstliche Hofsängerin war die zweite Ehefrau von Johann Sebastian Bach und Mutter einer großen Kinderschar. Ihre Handschrift findet sich in einer Vielzahl von Notenmanuskripten Bachscher Kompositionen. Johann Sebastian hat seiner Frau die Notenbüchlein von 1722 und 1725 gewidmet.

Anna Magdalena Bach, née Wilcke, lived at this location from 1723 to 1750. The former court singer was the second wife of Johann Sebastian Bach and the mother of a large family. Her handwriting appears in numerous manuscript copies of Bach's compositions. Johann Sebastian dedicated the music notebooks of 1722 and 1725 to his wife.

Johann Sebastian Bach lived and worked in an apartment within the Thomasschule while serving as cantor of St. Thomas Church and director of music for Leipzig's principal churches. Bach's residence was in the school building adjacent to the church. The Old Thomasschule was demolished in 1902, while St. Thomas Church still stands today.

Anna Magdalena Wilcke was born at Zeitz, in the Duchy of Saxe-Zeitz. While little is known about her early musical education, the family was musical. Her father, Johann Caspar Wilcke (c. 1660–1733), was a trumpet player, who had a career at the courts of Zeitz and Weißenfels.
