1. Great Miami Turnpike Marker
Inscription. In the early 1800's, a stagecoach ride in a Concord coach from Dayton to Cincinnati took 24 hours and cost eight cents per mile with an overnight stay in Hamilton. The dirt road, once traveled by foot, horse, wagon or stagecoach, was eventually paved with macadam (compacted broken stone), concrete or brick. Several turnpike companies were chartered to build macadamized roads connecting Dayton to Cincinnati and other towns. One of these major roads was the Great Miami Turnpike, constructed in 1840, which was later known as Cincinnati-Dayton Pike, Dixie Highway and U.S. Route 25. In 2016 City of Moraine employees uncovered remains of the original brick paved highway at ground level .7 miles south of this sign just to the left under the railroad overpass. The original brick road discovery measures 16' 11" wide.
