Inscription. Veterans and visitors alike enjoyed the refreshing springs and peaceful shade of this small paradise of flowers and fountains. Creeping vines covered the grotto rockwork, and rustic seats lined the winding pathways. Sometime around 1900, the stone arch structure was built to replace an earlier and simpler version that had stood since 1870. At one time, standing at the top of the stone stairway would afford visitors a sweeping view of the intricate and lavish flower gardens surrounding the upper lake.
