1. Roxy Theatre Marker

Inscription.
People living along the Byler Road came to Fayette to watch movies at the Roxy Theatre, located on this street. Originally called the New Richards Theatre, the Roxy opened in 1935. Lucille Cobb - a member of the family that founded Cobb Theatres - served as the manager of the Roxy, as well as Fayette's Richards Theater. The Roxy drew its biggest crowds on May 18-20, 1940, with the showing of “Gone With the Wind.” The Roxy would screen films with all-Black casts in midnight showings. The Roxy had a stage where live productions, including performances by Grand Ole Opry stars, took place. The Roxy showed films through 1953.

Newspapers have served the residents of Byler Road in Fayette County since before the Civil War. Several newspapers were published in the 1800s, including the Fayette Banner, Fayette Gazette, Fayette Sentinel, and Fayette Tribune. The Fayette Banner merged with the Fayette County Times to become the Fayette Times on September 30, 1954. The Fayette Times merged with two other papers to become the Daily Northwest Alabamian on February 1, 1962. The Times-Record published its first full edition on August 24, 1977. The Times-Record moved in 1989 to the former Roxy Theatre location on this street.
