The Ebenezer-Sheldon Deed House Project. . , The circa 1805 Ebenezer Sheldon Deed House structure is a one story wood framed building measuring 12' wide by 20' deep. Architecturally, the building represents a transition from Federal to Greek Revival and is consistent with the second wave of westward migration from New England following the American Revolution. Materials used in construction such as nails and glass were acquired in Pittsburgh while the lumber might have been milled locally at a sawmill owned by Ebenezer Sheldon., Land Agent's Office , Ebenezer Sheldon was a land agent for the Big Beaver and Cuyahoga Land Company which was comprised of a group of 30 investors from Suffield, Connecticut which had obtained 80,000 acres of land in the Ohio Western Reserve. Sheldon arrived in Aurora in 1799 where he cleared land and constructed a crude cabin. He returned to Suffield retrieving his wife Lovee and their five children and bringing them to Aurora in 1800., Relocation of the Deed House. , Originally located on the Sheldon homestead located three miles east on Pioneer Trail, the Deed House was relocated to its current location in Pioneer Park on July 31, 2015., Renovation , The Deed House was renovated as a result of a collaborative effort by the City of Aurora and the Aurora Historical Society. The City retains ownership of the structure, having entered into a long-term lease with the Historical Society. The Society operates the Deed House as a visitor center., City of Aurora Efforts. , The City was responsible for the moving and exterior renovation of the building. Placed on a new foundation, approximately 60% of the sill beam was replaced along with a portion of the clapboard siding and trim. A new entry door was handcrafted and a wooden shake roof was installed. The building was insulated and rewired. An HVAC system was installed to maintain the proper environment for the preservation of historic artifacts. Aurora Historical Society Efforts , The Aurora Historical Society was responsible for the interior renovation of the building. A capital campaign raised $52,000 in donations and in- kind services. Ceiling and walls were patched and painted. Woodwork was restored and in places handcrafted to match the original. New flooring replaced the original which was unable to be restored. Historic paint colors were used. Showcases were handcrafted by Historical Society members. A security system was installed., The Deed House was dedicated on June 9, 2016.
