Cascade Valley in Akron in Summit County, Ohio — The American Midwest (Great Lakes)
Freitag Garden
Christine and Bob were advocates who supported conservation efforts locally in Summit County and around the nation. Both were founding members of the Cascade Locks Park Association and Friends of Metro Parks; the latter of which Bob served as the first president. Christine was a Master Gardener, an active member of The Akron Garden Club, and president of The Garden Club of America from 1993 - 1995.
The plants in this garden serve as a food source to butterflies and native insects. As they move between the flowers, they pollinate neighboring plants so they can produce seed and a next generation. All of these plants are hosts to several larval insects like caterpillars that feed on the leaves and stems before morphing into their next stage of life. The beautiful purple poppy mallow planted in this garden is a host to the checkered skipper butterfly.
You too can locally support conservation efforts - consider adding some native plants to your garden to provide a little habitat for our local pollinators.
Erected by Akron Garden Club; Friends of Metro Parks; Cascade Locks Park Association; City of Akron; Summit Metro Parks; J. M. Kaplan Fund.
